Casa del Lector is a project initiated by Fundación Germán Sánchez Ruipérez as a centre for the promotion and support of reading and readers. The project can be located at Matadero Madrid, and is a place where research, workshops and experiments all focused on reading and readers, happen everyday.
Casa del Lector has a particular focus on new technologies and how they are affecting readers, literacy and learning. It provides a meeting point between the public and professionals, and between adults, youths and children. Casa del Lector explores reading through art, images and the spoken word as well as through texts.
Exhibitions, conferences, workshops, courses, music cycles, cinema and dramatic arts occur side by side with practical investigations; they interpret the world through reading, and through the reader. The building also includes a space within a space called Nube or cloud, dedicated to children between the ages of one and twelve. This space has been thought out to provide a universe built to scale for children, where they can develop, learn, hide, create and recreate, evade…finally in a space made to measure.
In 2010 the directors of Fundación Germán Sánchez Ruipérez decided that they would name César Antonio Molina, writer and ex-culture minister, as director of Casa del Lector.
