Tips to turn children and young people into independent users

One of the fundamental tasks of the library is to provide children and young people with skills and competences that allow them to use it autonomously and that facilitate access to information and knowledge.

Some basic guidelines for achieving this are:

·     Showing, through presentations and informational materials, the library’s areas, the layout, the library’s operations and the resources such as the printed and audiovisual materials, the services, the programs, the activities, etc.
·     Teaching children and young people how to use the search tools, the library’s own information files (catalogs and databases) and the classification systems to find easily the reading materials on the shelves.
·     Showing them the variety and special features of the different print and digital documentary sources, and teach them how to use them in order to find, process and reformulate information efficiently and ethically.
·     Encouraging the use of ICT as an everyday tool in their learning, communicative and leisure activities.
